Exhibition 2009: Steamroller Prints
Each year in partnership with the Salt Lake City Main Library, the Utah Arts Festival features the work of an artist with an artist reception and exhibit during the month of June.
Featuring Saltgrass Printmakers
June 6 – July 18
In a celebration of LARGE relief prints, Saltgrass Printmakers will present a show of woodcut prints at the Library’s 4th Floor Gallery that were created using a Steamroller. The woodcut prints started in a very traditional way: the artists carved images into wood, then applied ink to the raised surfaces for printing -- however, they were printed in a distinctly non-traditional, and indelicate way: using a steamroller. The large woodcuts were inked up outside on a hot August day in 2008, paper was laid carefully over the inked wood, and covered with protective blankets. The artist then drove over the inked woodcuts with a 1.3 ton steamroller. The pressure from the steamroller transferred the image to the paper.
The fi nished prints and some of the large boards that were used as the woodcut
matrices will be on display at the Saltgrass gallery.
